The Annotated Patent History blog is a digital humanities website that provides historical context for patented innovations. Each entry covers a single patent and details its development, significance, and outcomes. The sum of the entries, we hope, adds up to something even more. Though there is a vast set of literature and even some websites that investigate a single patent or a set of patents, there is no other contextualized archive for those looking to investigate the historical circumstances under which patents are filed, as well as the geographical, temporal, and personal connections between different inventions that are awarded patents.
Alison Lefkovitz is an associate professor in the Federated History Department at NJIT and Rutgers-Newark. She is the author of Strange Bedfellows: Marriage in the Age of Women’s Liberation, published with the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2018.
